Contemporary Mandalas

May 13th through July 15th 2006

A Mandala, traditionally used in Buddhist and Hindu meditation and ritual, is a geometric or pictorial design usually incorporating a circle, representing universal truths. In Jungian psychology, the mandala is a symbol representing the soul/self and harmony within the individual.

MicroCoSM Gallery is proud to represent seven contemporary artists working with the form of the Mandala.

Erial creates digital paintings motivated by a belief in the healing power of art. Provoked by visions, dreams, and the natural world, Erial strives to create art on the computer that inspires and vibrates with the wonders of creation.

Allyson Grey paints tens of thousands of spectral squares that create mandalas of chaos, order, and secret writing. Allyson is cofounder of the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors and MicroCoSM Gallery.

Fredric Harwin has been described as "an author, a teacher, an artist and a scientist - but above all a man of vision; a visual comm unicator". The subject of an award winning documentary, Fred masterfully paints the human eye and is a recognized leader in the profession of ocular prosthetics.

Dedicated to a vision of creating sacred art, Paul Heussenstam receives inspiration through painting, teaching "Art as a Spiritual Path", and traveling around the globe. Paul has explored the ancient tradition of the sacred mandalas and brought a multi-cultural wisdom to the genre.

Kris Kuksi, making cosmograms motivated by nature and psychology, is skilled in the painting techniques of the old masters. In the current Fantastic Realism/New Wave Surrealist movement, Kris' paintings are recognized and highly respected.

Recently proclaimed a "master artist" by the Dutch government, Pieter Weltevrede engages the healing power of ancient yantra painting. The media of Pieter's eclectic body of work ranges from zodiac paintings on silk to book illustration.

Eileen "Rosie" Rose considers process central to the creation of her colored pencil drawn mandalas. She co-authored the popular book/kit Create Your Own Sand Mandala; for Meditation, Healing and Prayer. Rosie is a certified facilitator of the Judith Cornell mandala technique and an art teacher for over thirty years.

Robert Nielsen's art, made of polymer clay, is inspired by Tibetan art and other cultural traditions. His work emphasizes the sublime spirituality of all beautiful forms and colors, exploring in depth the composition of the mandala. Nielsen has exhibited at Bess Cutler and Allan Stone Galleries in New York City.

Jesse Glawe combines symbolic ideas intointo unique pattern visions inspired by spiritual and religious perceptions. Working with the most basic tools, ink pens and paper, Jesse debuts his art at MicroCoSM.
